Powering Reliable Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future

CivEng Consulting is a Sunshine Coast – based civil and structural engineering design firm delivering high-quality, practical solutions for the power and renewable energy sector. CivEng specialise in HV substations, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and solar farms, along with industrial and commercial buildings such as control rooms and warehouses.

With over 80 years of combined industry experience, CivEng partners with electrical consultants, EPC contractors, and asset owners to provide reliable, cost-effective engineering outcomes that meet project specifications and deadlines.

TasNetworks St Marys Substation Transformer Replacement Project

A recent project success saw CivEng engaged by Megavar to deliver the civil and structural design for the TasNetworks St Marys transformer replacement project.

“CivEng has a long association with TasNetworks’ projects and has established a familiarity with its sites, technical standards, and staff over time, which has resulted in a sense of confidence and comfort, that the end product will be fit for purpose.”
– Leigh Henderson, Project Manager, TasNetworks.

The St Marys substation is located on the east coast of Tasmania supplying approximately 6,700 customers from Coles Bay in the south to Binalong Bay in the north.

The existing 10MVA transformers were originally commissioned in 1966 and TasNetworks had identified the need for
an upgrade.

“Megavar highly value the work of CivEng Consulting and we believe their core strength lies in their specialised civil and structural engineering support for the power and renewable energy sector. They excel in substation and switchyard design.

They combine strong technical capability with practical, cost-effective solutions that are fully compliant with Australian Standards. Their team brings deep experience in both greenfield and brownfield power projects, and they are particularly good at proactive problem-solving to avoid delays on the critical path. Their wealth of local knowledge and expertise ensures client satisfaction and makes projects a success.”

– Sam Hach, Senior Electrical Engineer, Megavar.

Civil and Structural Scope

The project scope required CivEng to carry out 3D earthworks modelling; transformer bund structural design, including the structural design of post insulator supports; and oil containment design including specification and detailing for an Atlan Spillceptor full retention oil and water separation tank.

Transformer Bund Design

CivEng has extensive experience in the structural design of transformer bunds with detailed knowledge of multiple utility design manuals and Australian Standards including concrete and water retaining structures.

This design involved a mix of hand calculations and Finite Element modelling to ensure compliance with TasNetworks and statutory requirements. CivEng’s flexible and collaborative approach allows fast turnaround times without compromising quality. This ensured the successful and timely completion of the bund construction on site.
